Online News - Life Skills Series

Keeping up with current events is an important life skill. While print newspapers used to be king... today many people get their news online.

Whether reading the home page of the Chicago Daily News, searching The Seattle Examiner for today’s weather forecast, or getting a “Sports News Alert” sent to our phone, reading the news allows us to get timely information about the people, places, and events we find interesting.

Captivating Lessons:

  • Timely topics and dynamic images keep students engaged while they learn about news sources that can be found on their smart phone, iPad or computer. Students discover which NFL team is looking for a new coach, read about the latest fashion and food trends, and even determine what time the Celtics play the Bucks in tonight’s NBA playoff game.

Reading Comprehension Activities:

  • 180 follow-up comprehension questions challenge students to find the who, what, when, where, or why of the various news articles and editorial columns. Students refer to charts, schedules, timelines and even tweets as they read for details, find facts, locate answers, determine author’s viewpoint and more.
